The kitchen is the heart of the home—
—and if there’s a heart of the kitchen, it’s the cabinetry. A fresh coat of paint is the quickest and easiest way to transform a space in your home and bring them to the next level. This applies not only to the walls, but the cabinets in your home as well. They take up a big portion of the room, particularly in the kitchen, so it’s important to give them the attention they deserve.
There are all sorts of kitchen looks you can go for. Natural wood kitchens—see some of our favorite Studio McGee-designed ones here—create a beautiful, organic feel, while painted wood can create a more diverse aesthetic, whether you’re going for traditional or sleek and modern. Bold or classic, the color you choose for your kitchen cabinets sets the tone of the entire room. Here, some of our favorite Studio McGee-designed kitchens and the paint colors that adorn their cabinets.

I love painted cabinets but I am afraid to take a chance. Any tips for a log home kitchen -? To brighten up the kitchen but still keep the log home feel?
Two words.. paint sprayer
Thanks for sharing your go to paint colors! I’m always inspired by your work and content! I’m with Natalie…I would LOVE to paint my existing cabinets but am a little terrified! Our new home’s cabinets have a decent layout, are fairly high quality, and are less than ten years old – so we hate to spend the money to replace them but are also scared to ruin them with paint! Do you all have any tips/tricks/dos/don’ts for painting cabinets? Help! 🙂
I really want a two toned kitchen and I LOVE the look of the lower cabinets in navy. If only I knew how to paint cabinets.
Yes please to a guide on how to paint cabinets! I can wrap my head around painting the doors but the inside seems impossible to do without professional help.
Great Post! Cabinet paint colors are always fun to pick, even if it’s just white, as there are a million whites out there! So happy to see two tone kitchens, as well as Color!! Who ever is responsible for selecting your paint colors, does a FAB job!!
So true! Thank you Natasha!!
These are perfect! Thank you! -Julie
Thanks Julie! Xo
What color is the white on the top cabinets in the platinum gray kitchen pictured?
Curious if you have advice on white cabinets and white walls. Same color in a different finish? Or bad idea entirely? Thanks for this helpful post!
Love them. Please though a guide on how to tackle them whilst painting. A friend had hers done by a decorator and I could see brush marks.
You should definitely use a paint sprayer! This will give you a completely smooth finish and make the cabinets look like they were made that way. There are many tutorials online.
What version of BM paint do you suggest for cabinets? Advanced? Or are you color matching with an acrylic lacquer? This is where I get stuck!
Thank you for including our green kitchen! We love using Sherwin Williams Clary Sage, it is such a great toned down green.
Thanks for giving us such a beautiful source of inspiration!
Thank you for this post!! We are painting cabinets soon and this is SO helpful!! Love everything you all do!

We’re so glad! Thaks Ashley!!
Which post/project is the photo of Benjamin Moore Woodlawn Blue from? It is so lovely and I would love to see the whole room for context.
It’s from our Windsong Project! http://www.studio-mcgee.com/studioblog/2016/9/25/windsong-project-loft-girls-room-nursery
What about a natural wood look? Do you guys stick to stains? Use an oak base? We’re curious
Same question as Kelsey, if I have white walls and a brighter white trim and doors, should I do my white kitchen cabinets the same as wall color or the trim!??
If I’m having my kitchen cabinets professionally painted; what is the best process to make sure they don’t get that "gummy" feeling after time. Additionally, I was going to paint the Benjamin Moore White Dove. What finish should I use?
Would love to know the paint color used in these cabinets https://www.instagram.com/p/BVI2Fx5hJmn/?taken-by=studiomcgee
Do you guys sell the floating shelves featured in the kitchen? If not, where can I find them?
Love your channel!!
we are taking your advice and going with BM platinum grey for cabinets in the kitchen I have white oak floors. doing a quartz marble look alike. My question is would you do honed or polished for the waterfall countertops? Any specific quartz you recommend goes well with BM platinum grey?
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful kitchen designs! We are having our maple cabinets painted snd laquered. We’re going to use super white quartzite on the island and cambrian black on the remainder of the counters. Which white would you suggest for the cabinets?
Love your style, recently our home flooded wHarveyand my beautiful glazed cabinets took on water, 13”. Everyone says I must paint them. Would it look weird to paint the bottom cabinets and not the tops? The island is very ornate and makes me sick to think of painting it also. Advice please!!!
Looking for some advice. I’m painting my base cabinets BM Kendall Charcoal and the upper cabinets BM Chantilly Lace. What would be a complimentary wall color?
What finish do you recommend for painting cabinets?
What wall colour and what trim colour did you use in the project where the cabinets were painted BM platinum (HC 179)? Thanks
Would it be possible add complimentary wall paint and trim colors in relation to these cabinet colors, Especially with the whites! 🙂
How wonderful of you to share these color tips – maybe we will not get lost in the color jungle which is easier said than done… 😉
Your style is so fresh and truly your own. Just love it!
Have a wonderful summer!
