The McGee’s Craft + Music Room

All the details from the McGee's kid space.

12 August 2021 -

Right outside of the McGee Home kitchen, an arched door leads to the home’s craft and music room. Complete with a craft table, a piano, and storage space for all the markers and glitter, this room is all about fun, and we couldn’t love it more!

This space evolved differently than the rest in The McGee Home; we didn’t have a specific plan, measure everything, and order the pieces all at once. Instead, it evolved with our family’s needs and interests, and although we expect it to continue to change as the girls get older, we are excited to share it with you today!

If you missed our webisode, watch it below, and keep scrolling for the full photo tour and more details.

Thank you to The Shade StoreMetrieLemcoKillowen Construction, and Windsor Windows for helping us bring this space to life!

No. 01 | The Finishes

We started with one of our favorite paint colors, which we used throughout our home, Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore, at 75% strength. Next, we chose herringbone flooring from Lemco that brings a playful element with a subtle pattern, custom stained to match the tone of our hardwood in the rest of our home.

No. 02 | Window Treatments

When selecting window treatments for this space, we wanted to do something different than woven shades and add a hint of color. We ended up choosing this really light greyish blue Luxe Linen Fabric in the color “Silver” for our Flat Roman Shades from The Shade Store and we couldn’t love it more!

No. 03 | The Lighting

For our lighting, we decided to forgo the single fixture in the middle of the room and do four white flush mounts that bring a timeless, industrial feeling to the space. We added picture lights (similar) to frame either side of our hutch, and we love how they add some symmetry and focus to the art and decor underneath them.

No. 04 | The Furniture

We started with the essentials, the craft table, and the adorable white spindle chairs with a vintage rug underneath to ground the look.

Soon after we moved in, Wren started asking to play the piano, so we went on a hunt to find the perfect upright piano. We love this one in the light oak finish because it feels really airy and doesn’t take up a ton of space. Plus, our new favorite part about cooking is looking from the kitchen through the arch to see her playing!

On the opposite wall, we found a cabinet that mirrors the same wood tone from the piano. The closed drawers hide lots of paper, paint, and markers (when they’re not all splayed out on the craft table).

If you’ve been following along with our projects, you know we love ottomans. We use them everywhere, from living rooms by the fireplace to the foot of the bed. In the craft room, two woven ottomans help fill the space on either side of the hutch and allow for extra seating. We use them all the time to sit by the craft table with the girls or to listen to them play the piano.

No. 05 | The Styling

On the wall opposite the window, we displayed a gallery wall of our family photos and then filled in the rest of the decor with personal objects + pieces. We gathered some of the girl’s old bows, framed them on a linen mat, and mixed some of their artwork with my favorite vintage pieces.

Since we still had more wall space to fill around the piano, we decided to do this really cool leather oval mirror from McGee & Co. and then anchor the space with a plant on the other side in one of our favorite planters.
