Our Favorite Spaces for the Littles
Oh, to be young and carefree. Here, a few Studio McGee-designed kid's rooms we secretly want to move into.

A place to nurture wonder and creativity—
—that’s always the goal when designing a kid’s room. Coming up with a room design for kids is a lot like designing for adults in terms of making it functional, but the added element is creating a space that elicits a sense of safety, that feeds creativity, and provides a palette that demonstrates their unique personality.
Over the years, Shea and the design team have been lucky enough to develop quite a few kids room ideas for our clients, and have been front row to seeing them through from mood board to personal play space. While the aim is to include design elements that repeat throughout the homes they live in, each has its own feeling, palette, and personality, just like the kid that lives within it.
From charming pattern-filled rooms to neutral, calming spaces, these cool rooms for kids were created to be well-loved from their first use and built to grow with their kid as he/she ages. No. 01 | The McGee Kids
Look no further for cool rooms for kids than the McGee’s own Utah house. Wren, Ivy, and Margot have the ultimate designer mom who has crafted some truly spectacular places to grow up for her young family. Wren’s room design is grounded by a white and gold color palette, as seen in the Demi Floral Stripe Wallpaper from McGee & Co. The Northcott Bed in Alabaster Crypton is the perfect, soft spot to land, in addition to a custom built-in window seat upholstered in a light pintucked fabric. Ivy’s room features a storybook-like vaulted ceiling accented with McGee & Co.’s Alberto Chandelier. Ivy’s bathroom sees one of Shea’s favorite Morris & Co. Wallpapers adorning the walls. See our entire Morris & Co. x Studio McGee collaboration here. Lastly, the baby of the family, Margot, gets a sweet nursery as she grows into a larger space. Complementing the ceiling color— Benjamin Moore’s Just Beige—is McGee & Co.’s Florencecourt Wallpaper in stone. The Gelato Crib is the star of the room, with a lot of space left open around it. “When space planning a nursery, I always like to leave the space open in the middle so babies can crawl, roll around and play. Then, when they get older, we can add toys,” explains Shea. The McGee kids room décor has always been some of our favorites.

No. 02 | The Hilltop Estate Kids
One of our favorite room designs for kids is found in our Hilltop Estate project. “I am so glad that we designed a space that grows up well. It speaks to [the importance of] picking transitional pieces that can be changed through textiles and color palette,” says Shea of the kid’s room decor. Setting Plaster by Farrow & Ball covers the walls of the girl’s room in the project, accenting a soft white, four-poster bed. In the boys’ rooms, McGee & Co.’s Hensley Bed sits under a dimensional art piece of footballs and the other features the Ainsworth Bed atop the Bavaria Handwoven Indoor/Outdoor Rug that serves as a beautiful feature with tons of durability for the wear and tear of young boy life.

No. 03 | The Rye New York Kids
If you’re looking for kids’ bedroom ideas, take note of this fun spaces in our Rye New York project. You’ll notice nods to the personalities of those that inhabit the room through artwork and accessories, plus cool design moments that foster the desire for the kids to hang out, like a hanging swing chair and a work desk.

No. 04 | The Home on the Ranch Kids
On Season 2 of our Netflix show, Dream Home Makeover, viewers were introduced to a family with two boys and two girls. Shea and the design team created spaces as unique as each of them were, featuring color palettes that complimented their personalities and interests, all while incorporating farmhouse design elements found elsewhere in the home. Some of our favorite moments are McGee & Co.’s Faris Bed paired with relaxed, charcoal linen bedding, moody wood paneling (Gunmetal by Benjamin Moore) paired with pops of orange that was requested by the client, the sweetest woven rattan bed paired with a rattan light fixture, and the Northcott Bed in fawn velvet for a lush, cozy feeling in a kid-centric space. We love how this project features some really cool rooms for kids.

No. 05 | The AZ Homestead Kids
Have you ever seen a more darling space for two little girls to grow up? We love this pattern-heavy room with two spindle beds flanking a shared nightstand—the Louise Nightstand in grey from McGee & Co. “I think that the obvious answer after doing floral wallpaper would have been to do something completely different on the artwork above the beds,” Shea says, “but I love that we leaned into the look even more with the botanical charts.” If you have two little ones sharing a space, look here for the ultimate inspiration for kids’ bedroom ideas.
