Our director of product answering a few upholstery care questions!
When it comes to upholstery, caring for your pieces is an important part of maintaining their look and feel for years to come.
We consider upholstery an investment, and at McGee & Co., we have spent years perfecting our pieces to offer options that last a lifetime.
However, the investment of upholstery doesn't stop at the purchase, and today, our director of product, Alyssa Macy, is going to answer a few frequently asked questions on how to care for our upholstery pieces!
If something spills on your upholstery, use a clean and cool, damp cloth to soak up the liquid. It's best to work from the outside in to avoid a ring forming around the stain. Make sure you never scrub the cloth and grind the stain in the fabric, but gently press the cloth into the stain instead.
If needed, spot clean your upholstery using a water-based shampoo or upholstery cleaner. When using a cleaner, test it in an inconspicuous area first before you use it on the desired location.
We highly recommend consulting a professional cleaning service to use pure solvents rather than attempting it yourself. Professional upholstery cleaners can help maintain the original appearance and quality of your upholstery pieces by servicing them about once a year.
One of the benefits of 100% natural leather is that light scratches can actually be buffed out with a rub of a finger. When it comes to leather, it's important to dust it regularly as dust can create cracks and irregularities.
While some natural fading is inevitable and can create a desired patinated look over time, we do recommend keeping certain upholstery fabrics like leather and linen out of direct sunlight if possible. Darker fabrics also tend to fade more noticeably than lighter fabrics, so we recommend arranging your darker-colored pieces away from direct sunlight.
Yes! Vacuuming your upholstery is a great way to self-maintain the look and feel. We recommend using the hand-held nozzle on your vacuum cleaner to gently lift dust and debris.
Although the cases are removable on each of our upholstery pieces at McGee & Co., we do not recommend removing them unless absolutely necessary as it can be difficult to replace the insert and maintain the original aesthetic.
Rotating and re-fluffing your upholstery pieces from time to time is a great way to maintain their full and lived-in look.
The cushions in our upholstery collection at McGee & Co. are made with a solid foam core, wrapped feather/down, and a feather proof casing to ensure a consistent and strong shape that will take longer to show wear.
Thank you so much for the upholstery care tips. Very helpful information.
Have you done a blog post on selecting upholstery fabrics, i.e. family/pet friendly fabrics that will not pill, are durable, etc.?
Even with post care, I find that white or beige upholstered fabric will usually turn darker due to dust, dirt and stains. Is there a way to keep them looking bright and like new?
