When it comes to upholstery, caring for your pieces is an important part of maintaining their look and feel for years to come.

We consider upholstery an investment, and at McGee & Co., we have spent years perfecting our pieces to offer options that last a lifetime.

However, the investment of upholstery doesn’t stop at the purchase, and today, our director of product, Alyssa Macy, is going to answer a few frequently asked questions on how to care for our upholstery pieces!

Upholstery Care Guide FAQ

What do I do if something spills on my upholstery?

If something spills on your upholstery, use a clean and cool, damp cloth to soak up the liquid. It’s best to work from the outside in to avoid a ring forming around the stain. Make sure you never scrub the cloth and grind the stain in the fabric, but gently press the cloth into the stain instead.

Should I use a cleaner on my upholstery?

If needed, spot clean your upholstery using a water-based shampoo or upholstery cleaner.  When using a cleaner, test it in an inconspicuous area first before you use it on the desired location.

Should I get my upholstery professionally cleaned?

We highly recommend consulting a professional cleaning service to use pure solvents rather than attempting it yourself. Professional upholstery cleaners can help maintain the original appearance and quality of your upholstery pieces by servicing them about once a year.

How can I get the scratches in my leather out?

One of the benefits of 100% natural leather is that light scratches can actually be buffed out with a rub of a finger. When it comes to leather, it’s important to dust it regularly as dust can create cracks and irregularities.

Will my upholstery become discolored if I keep it in the sun?

While some natural fading is inevitable and can create a  desired patinated look over time, we do recommend keeping certain upholstery fabrics like leather and linen out of direct sunlight if possible. Darker fabrics also tend to fade more noticeably than lighter fabrics, so we recommend arranging your darker-colored pieces away from direct sunlight.

Can I vacuum my upholstery?

Yes! Vacuuming your upholstery is a great way to self-maintain the look and feel. We recommend using the hand-held nozzle on your vacuum cleaner to gently lift dust and debris.

Should I remove my upholstery cases and wash them?

Although the cases are removable on each of our upholstery pieces at McGee & Co., we do not recommend removing them unless absolutely necessary as it can be difficult to replace the insert and maintain the original aesthetic.

How can I maintain the full and fluffy look of my upholstery pieces?

Rotating and re-fluffing your upholstery pieces from time to time is a great way to maintain their full and lived-in look.

The cushions in our upholstery collection at McGee & Co. are made with a solid foam core, wrapped feather/down, and a feather proof casing to ensure a consistent and strong shape that will take longer to show wear.
