How to Style With Woven Textures

A guide for incorporating natural materials into your space for moments of warmth and dimension.

It’s easy to assume styling with woven textures is a design trick reserved for bohemian or beachside homes, given the laidback and organic nature of the material choice. But you’d be wrong for assuming. Shea and the design team at Studio McGee love incorporating woven textures into a variety of spaces, from traditional living rooms to more modern kitchens.

There’s an easy place to start when wanting to style more woven textures into your space. A woven basket is an inexpensive, low-risk, high reward option. Plop a larger scale one next to a sofa and fill it with throw blankets and toss pillows. A bit more commitment from there would be a table lamp with a woven rattan lampshade, like McGee & Co.’s Johanson Woven Table Lamp. From there, you can incorporate woven textures into your dining chairs or bar stools—McGee & Co.’s Dailey Dining Chair features hyacinth weaving and can make an appearance in more formal dining rooms without feeling out of place—a jute area rug, or a large statement overhead fixture like the Alondra Chandelier.

The lounge area in the McGee’s home basement is a great example of utilizing woven textures in a budget-friendly way, or just dabbling in the look before you style it in bigger moments throughout your home. Woven baskets and trays are used throughout, for storage in built-in shelving, for display on a coffee table, and for visual interest next to a console table.

In an otherwise contemporary kitchen, Shea and the design team introduced a series of woven-back bar stools for an element of texture against the Calacatta marble countertop. The result is a space that feels natural and organic and exhibits a sense of flow and dimension. While a set of bar stools isn’t necessarily inexpensive, they can easily be swapped out down the road as your home décor evolves.

This stunning outdoor dining area is a prime example of woven textures used to introduce drama and elevate a space in a way that leans hard into the aesthetic. A trio of spherical overhead fixtures hang atop an expansive wooden table, helping to define the dining area against the rest of the outdoor space.
