Five Things to Consider When Designing Your Living Room

Designing a home is about more than choosing furniture and decor—it’s about creating a space that’s functional, inviting, and matches your personal style.

Over the years, we’ve learned some tried-and-true strategies that make all the difference, whether you’re designing a cozy living room or a bustling family space. Today, we’re sharing five of our favorite design tips to help you create a home that balances style with practicality.

Five Things to Consider When Designing Your Living Room

01

Choose the Right Fabric for Your Family

If you have kids or pets, the fabric you choose can be the key to stress-free living. While no material is completely “life-proof,” certain options hold up better under daily wear and tear. Crypton is a favorite for families thanks to its durability, and full-grain leather is another excellent choice, as it ages beautifully and resists wear.

Dark fabrics can help hide marks, and if you have a cat, velvet might surprise you—it’s less appealing for scratching (though it will attract fur). For those who adore the elegance of linen, we say go for it in lower-traffic spaces like sitting rooms or primary suites. Opting for a slipcover makes cleaning and refreshing your look much easier.

Want to take a risk with fabric? Try bold choices on chairs—they’re often shielded by throw pillows or blankets and are easier to reupholster if needed. For more tips on upholstery fabrics, check out our detailed guide.

02

Less Furniture Doesn’t Make Your Space Look Bigger

Contrary to popular belief, minimizing furniture doesn’t always create the illusion of more space. In fact, using pieces that are scaled correctly can highlight a room’s dimensions and make it feel more cohesive. Anchor your windows with a bench vignette or layer in consoles to fill the space without overcrowding it.

03

Make It Walkable, but Don’t Skimp on Seating

Balancing functionality and flow is essential in any living area. Benches and stools are excellent additions that provide extra seating while being easy to move. They’re perfect for entertaining or creating an adaptable layout without disrupting the room’s walkability.

Layer Your Lighting

The right lighting can completely transform a space, so don’t overlook it! Mixing table and floor lamps is a great way to add dimension and create a cozy atmosphere. In an L-shaped configuration, a large floor lamp or a well-placed table lamp on a side table can beautifully illuminate the space. Just ensure the lamp sizes complement the proportions of the room.

05

Pick the Perfect Coffee Table

A coffee table does more than hold your books and cups; it’s a central element in your design. To maintain balance, consider the shapes already present in your living room. For example, pair an L-shaped couch with a round coffee table to soften angular lines and improve flow. Conversely, if you’re working with mostly round shapes, a rectangular coffee table can provide contrast and structure.
