Creating a welcoming, open-concept living space in Dream Home Makeover 

Last, but never least… 

In the final episode of Dream Home Makeover Season 3, we follow along with the update of Briana and Josh’s open-concept entry, living, and dining spaces. Their family’s story is a heart-rending one, but a source of encouragement to create a home they’ll hold extra close.  

This last webisode with Shea covers the challenges seen during this project, and the design choices that cleverly solved them. We’re so grateful to have been able to create a bright spot in the lives of Briana, Josh, and their resilient family.

In the entryway, we updated the porcelain tile design with a tumbled stone herringbone floor, and took advantage of the wall space to furnish a visual greeting moment. 

Tying this open-concept layout together, the existing beams and floors span across each area. We kept their dark wood stain to contrast with refreshed lighter walls, and brought in antiques and textiles that add a complementary character. 

Key to this remodel was giving a sense of purpose to the living room. It needed to balance the austerity of a formal living room with the approachability of a kid-friendly play area. So, you’ll see curved furniture, a huge area rug, welcoming bay window decor, and practical use of the large back wall. 

Artwork was a major consideration for this home, knowing the scale of the walls to be filled and the degree of cohesion needed between spaces. We mixed different mediums, like sketches, photography, and paintings, while sticking to a core palette from room to room. 

It may be the end of our webisodes for Dream Home Makeover (for now!), but we hope the inspiration has just begun. Check out more deep dives and design tips from this season to keep the ideas coming.
