How to Style Layered Details: Tips From Our Netflix Show

Go-to tricks from the team

Styling is all about adding layers of detail that make a room feel thoughtful, lived-in, and personal.

We love watching a design come to life through the finishing touches, and after years of styling projects, we’ve learned a thing or two about how to style with form and function in mind.

On our Netflix show “Dream Home Makeover,” our styling team implemented a few of our go-to tips and tricks for creating a well-styled space, and today, we’re going to give you a closer look at how you can apply them in your own home!

Here are some of our favorite tips from the seasons!

Tip No. 1: Add baskets for storage and texture

We use some sort of basket in almost every room we style. Not only do they provide a simple way to add more functional storage to your vignette, but they also add texture and visual depth.

Tip No. 2: Add functional but pretty kitchen decor

Often times, the kitchen becomes an afterthought when it comes to styling. However, we’re here to argue that the kitchen deserves just as much thought as your coffee table or console. Adding decor that’s pretty and functional not only saves precious counter space but creates a look that looks more relaxed.

Try styling a large textural bowl in the center of your island that you can re-fill with seasonal fruit, or adding an elevated, ceramic crock filled with cooking utensils by your stove for easy access.

Tip No. 3: Incorporate family photos in personal vignettes

While we aren’t typically drawn towards using big staged family photos as the focal point of a space, we love adding family photos in more personal areas that feel intimate. Plus, using smaller family photos brings the perfect opportunity to add a pretty, textured frame to your look.

Looking to make a statement with your family photos? Try incorporating a gallery showcasing your favorite memories on a blank wall that could use some extra love.

Tip No. 4: Drawing in organic elements

One of the best ways to give your space a relaxed, lived-in look is through incorporating natural materials through your decor. We love adding wood, stone, and woven textures to our built-ins to balance out and contrast sleeker, more modern accents.

Tip No. 5: Styling art in unexpected places

Don’t be afraid to lean a piece of art on a kitchen built-in or countertop, hang one above your nightstand to create a thoughtful moment, or even incorporate art in your powder room! In our opinion, you can ever have too much great art, and it’s one of the easiest ways to breathe some life into a room.

Tip No. 6: Don’t shy away from substantial decor pieces

Sometimes large decor pieces can feel intimidating, but crowding a vignette with too many small objects makes it feel cluttery instead of intentional. Incorporating a good substantial decor piece on a console, coffee table, or in a built-in actually makes styling easier, instantly elevating any space.
