Inside The Oaks Project, where contemporary meets classic.

"Behind the kitchen," Shea orients us to the home's layout, “you walk under a wood-lined passageway into a kitchen that ties into the wood detail." From this entrance, the first thing you see is a massive range. Acting as its backdrop, Shea and the design team installed beautifully handmade Zellige tiles in a creamy white. "We did gap spacing between the tiles to create a striping effect," she explains. An unlacquered brass pot rail brings a touch of vintage charm to the range's backsplash, the metal choice tying into the metals used elsewhere.

A Vintage-Inspired White

Throughout the vast majority of the home, including the kitchen, Shea and the design team opted for Futon by Sherwin Williams. The rich, creamy white has the perfect amount of depth to warm up the modern architecture while introducing a creamy shade that brings vintage-inspired charm.

"With the rod, I love that you're getting really simple forms with a vintage element. The patina creates a home that feels lived in."

To soften the more modern elements of the space—like sleek, steel windows—Shea designed the countertops to have gently sloping edge profiles. “It’s a bit of femininity,” she adds. “It’s those little hints of softness that go a long way for making a home feel inviting.”

How to Inject Character Into a New Build

One of the more defining areas of the kitchen is a side wall with a bank of steel-framed windows. The view to the exterior oak trees is stunning and Shea and the design team didn’t want to alter its appeal by adding upper cabinetry. “I wanted more room for styling so we could add some personality” to the kitchen, Shea explains. To accommodate, a floating wall-to-wall shelf was installed atop the grided window system with brackets that were integrated into the mullions for a streamlined feel. The end look “didn’t break up the visual, just added to it,” Shea exclaims, “and now our clients can style with all of these vintage pieces” to add to the charm of the home.
