Mountainside Retreat: The Kitchen & Pantry

The heart of the home

25 August 2021 -

In the open open-concept space…

of the Mountainside Retreat, the great room opens up to the light-filled kitchen. Complete in collaboration with Lloyd Architects and Jackson and Leroy, this space was designed for our client’s large family to gather, entertain, and retreat.

With a minimal material palette..

of warm grey, black, and stainless steel, the kitchen design brings contrasting details while maintaining a calming feeling throughout.

Black metal accents on the stools and pendants complement the black metal thin-framed windows, and the ceiling-high backsplash and custom hood detail draw the eye up.

"The countertops are one of my favorite features in this space because the Calcutta has this gorgeous warm veining throughout."

- Shea McGee

The Calcutta countertops…

add a warm veining detail to the space, bringing interest with their textural-like impact. We added a glass-front hutch on the other side of the refrigerator and freezer, creating a furniture-like moment.

Complete with glass doors and drawers with T-latch pulls, the hutch gave us an opportunity to style some interesting woven textures and wood tones that bring each element together.

When working with contemporary spaces…

we love to add dimension and bring them to life with the styling details. One of our favorite styling elements in this kitchen is the incorporated sculptural lamp. While it feels a bit unexpected, it still works within the kitchen’s context and takes everything to the next level.

On install day…

we had a great color palette, hardware, and materials, but we felt like something was missing on the empty wall in-between the great room and kitchen. Although the obvious answer may have been artwork, we had a specially commissioned piece on a nearby surface, and we wanted to go in a different direction.

We came up with this concept to do a modern cutting board wall, styling a few vintage cutting boards and dried florals on a thin metal rack, and we couldn’t love it more!

In the pantry….

we carried all of the same materials into the space and styled the shelves to create a blank canvas for our client to add in food and extra storage as needed. Complete with an extra dishwasher and a place to prepare food, this space makes for the perfect butler’s pantry when entertaining.
