How to Incorporate Meaningful Accents

Subtle ways to add personality to your home

Adding elements that showcase what’s important to you in your space is one of the best ways to bring personality to your styling.

Over the years, we’ve had the chance to experiment with different methods of displaying meaningful accents in our projects, and we’re excited to share some inspiration and tips on how we do today.

Here are a few ideas for incorporating meaningful accents:

Styling objects

We love using statement-making objects in our styling to bring more dimension to a vignette, but an object doesn’t need to be a decorative piece to make an impact.

“A styling object doesn’t have to be a sculptural piece. You can display something as simple as a piece of driftwood you found on a beach vacation. Find something that means something to you. and it will become a conversation starter.” – Kristine Metcalf, VP of Creative.

Displaying expressive books

Coffee table books are a great way to bring subtle personality to your space while adding dimension. When we’re adding the finishing touches to a home, we often use expressive coffee table books to showcase our client’s interests, places they’ve traveled, or artistic works that speak to them.

Framing unexpected pieces

Don’t be afraid to think out of the box with what you frame and display throughout your home. Whether it’s a hand-written note that means something to you, a memento from a special place you’ve traveled, or something you may have tucked away that could be shown in a new light.

This lost winds pendant framed in The McGee Home Office is from Syd’s favorite surf spot in San Clemente,

We framed this basketball court sketch above bed in Rye New York Project to incorporate our client’s kids love for basketball in a unique way.

In our Layered Coastal Netflix Bedroom, our client purchased a tea towel on vacation in Hawaii and knew they wanted to incorporate it but didn’t know what to do with it. We decided to frame it and hang it in their room, and we love the personality it adds to the space!

Incorporating pinboards

Pinboards are alternative to displaying photos or notes in your space that may be too small to frame. Whether in a family space or in an office space used to pin inspiration, there are countless ways to re-create a pinboard.

Infusing travel memories into your design

Finding subtle ways to incorporate your favorite travel memories is a great way to create a unifying feeling in your space. Bringing in textures, tones, and patterns that represent the location or memory you want to portray.

When we started conceptualizing the boy’s room in our Rye New York Project, he told us that his favorite place is Switzerland. We used that for our inspiration and incorporated a black and white mountain mural behind his wall.
