As the seasons start to change, it’s inevitable that we all start settling into our homes for colder months. The leaves start to change and we start to get cozy. Here at Studio McGee, we love bringing seasonal elements and styling moments into our homes to reflect the environment around us. The fall is all about creating a cuddled-up type of environment with lots of warm layers, soft textures, and seasonally specific accent colors that create a feeling of comfort. Transitioning your home for the fall is the best way to ease the transition mentally, we’ve found. Whether you’re looking to add new elements to a specific space or refresh your styling to welcome the feeling of the season, here are a few simple things you can do to make your home feel like fall.

No. 01 | Add warmth to your color palette
No. 02 | Layer in cozy textiles
No. 03 | Add storage solutions
No. 04 | Layer your lighting for ambiance

No. 01 | Add warmth to your color palette

We love adding decor materials that resemble what we see outside with every season, and in the fall, it’s all about incorporating natural materials with deep textural elements. Incorporate decor pieces in wood, brass, or woven materials to bring warmth to any vignette.

No. 02 | Layer in cozy textiles

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, pillows and throws can go a long way in completely transforming the feeling of a room, and that piece of advice is no more relevant than it is in the fall and winter. In the fall, we love trading out lighter-weight fabrics with heavier, textural materials to add a sense of warmth and create layering in a mix of fabrics in both construction and pattern. We suggest adding a throw to the end of your bed for a fresh look and feel to your bedroom but also to have to grab for extra warmth as the nights get chilly. An easy way to transition your living room for fall is by switching out a few pillows on your sofa or draping an extra throw on an accent chair.

No. 03 | Add storage solutions

With a new season often comes new routines, or falling back into old ones, and whether you’re getting ready for your kids to start school or you’re re-imaging your home office setup, it’s the perfect time to re-think the function of your space. Add beautiful and functional storage solutions like baskets for backpacks and shoes in the mudroom and boxes and trays in the entryway for dropping your keys on the way out the door. We don’t think spring is the only time you should do an overhaul of your space, but rather make it a seasonal activity that gets your mind and workflow ready for a new season of life.

No. 04 | Layer your lighting for ambiance

Lighting can make or break the feeling of a space, and since fall welcomes cooler, darker months, good lighting and ambiance are even more important. You cannot rely on sunlight infiltrating your home anymore. Consider adding levels to your lighting layers with sconces, floor lamps, or table lamps, and ignite the senses with candles in every room.

No. 05 | Finish with decor details

Incorporating the color palette of the fall season into your home’s styling is a great way to make your home feel refreshed. In the fall, look to the deep, warm hues of the leaves and trees as inspiration. Moody browns, rich greens, deep oranges and reds, are the colors we love introducing into our home’s decor to help transition it into the fall. While you don’t need to re-haul all of your built-in decor or re-style the whole great room to make your home feel like fall, incorporating a few pieces can make all the difference. Add artwork that reflects autumnal moments or refreshed, seasonal greenery.
