McGee Home: Kitchen Process

Inspiration and process behind the McGee home kitchen!

It’s hard to believe that we’re putting final touches on the McGee home,

installing furniture, and getting ready to move in. Earlier this week, we shared a look into the exterior inspiration and process, and because we’re too excited to wait, we’ll be sharing more of the process with you here until we’re ready for the full reveal! If you’ve been following along with the McGee Home Project, you know that our kitchen has been one of our favorite areas to work on. As the focal point of our home, the kitchen is a special place for our family to gather, share meals, and decompress after long days at the office. Needless to say, finally being able to design our kitchen from start to finish for the first time has been so exciting!

We’re so grateful for our sponsors, Killowen ConstructionBedrosians Tile and StoneClé TileArmac Martin ,MetrieKohlerMcGee & Co, and everyone else involved for all of their support! Working with people who understand your vision makes all the difference.

We can’t wait to share more once we fill it with our favorite serve ware, accessories, and linens. For now, we’re sharing a look into the inspiration behind our design process and how we made this special space feel just right! Although our design has changed quite a bit since we created this mood-board, here’s where we started:

McGee Home Kitchen Inspiration

When gathering inspiration for the space, we focused on creating a look that felt both timeless and transitional. Working from a natural and understated color palette, we carefully selected each detail from the Lacanche Range to the Kallista Faucet. Complete with a butcher block countertop, and open slots for cookie sheets in the pantry, it couldn’t feel more custom. Keep scrolling for a more in-depth look into our kitchen plans and progress.

Time-Honored Touches

There’s something about brass details that feel timeless yet updated. We went with unlacquared brass hardware from Armac Martin and we love the way it complements our sconces, and pulls in brass elements from our range and pendants.

Conventional Classics

Paint is always a hot topic over here, and we have a historic love for neutrals with a bit of depth. We went with Creamy White by Benjamin Moore on the cabinets, coordinating with Swiss Coffee at 75% strength by Benjamin Moore on walls, ceiling, and in our dining room. Initially, we planned to do a light wood island, but we ended up staining it dark to add more depth.

Transitional Textures

We are firm believers that no palette is complete without textural elements. Muted paint colors paired with a white plaster hood, Bedrosians marble slab, and Clé tile, enhanced the visual aspects of the space and brought an elevated juxtaposition of classic and modern styles. We also bought antique pocket doors for our pantry off eBay at midnight! Here’s to hoping they look as beautiful as this moment from Coco & Jack!

I love being able to look out the windows of our dining room and see where our trampoline and swing set are going to be! Beautiful ceiling treatments by Metrie make it even better.

  3. We share your excitement. A bit behind you … the shovels for our new home went in the ground yesterday. Thank you for sharing and for your inspiration. Enjoy. This time it is for you and your family!

  4. I have read/heard that a marble slab as a backsplash behind the stove is not a good idea because overtime it will get smoke marks and cooking stains. Any thoughts on this? Or advice on how to avoid the staining? I LOVE the look, and am considering it for my own kitchen. Thoughts?
