Promontory Project: Great Room, Kitchen

Tour the entry, great room, and kitchen of the Promontory Project!

There are too many rooms and pictures to reveal the Promontory Project in one day!

Yesterday we gave you a glimpse of the project with a webisode and paint colors so we’re excited to show you a full photo tour this week. Today, we’ll start with the entrance, great room, and kitchen. You’ll notice throughout the space that we chose a lot of natural finishes, but found ways to balance the space and not make it dark and heavy like you’ll commonly see in mountain homes. You can tour the downstairs/office, and the main floor/master suite when you’re done! For the exterior, we mixed materials for a cabin home that feels more modern instead of a kitschy and typical. We wanted it to feel cozy and familiar, but not look like a predictable mountain exterior.

As you come into the entry, you can see that we skipped the statement lighting. For the home, we wanted the space to feel open and not take away from the beautiful ceiling detail. We added a statement console with our Gannet Table Lamps and Blackwell Mirror. We used tile to define the entry space and mirrored the colors and style found in the stone fireplace. Since it’s a mountain home, the flooring needs to be functional and durable to receive wet boots, skis, etc.

The stone fireplace is a huge detail that feels very mountain home. We took the stones all the way to the ceiling for a dramatic effect. The interesting part of this fireplace is the stone color. We needed to hand select a lot of the stones used to really control the range of color used. It needed to feel warm, but not dark and heavy.

The built-in cabinets were a chance to really set the tone for the home. We used natural wood for a very mountain feel, but we chose a very modern stain and details to update the look. The brass sconce added to the rustic charm of the corner and lights up all our favorite features. We filled it with some of our favorite accessories like our wood boxesglass lidded dishwhite matte starcubist objecttriangle round boxes, and magnifying glass.

Just like the entry way, we chose not to do lighting above the dining table. Especially because you can see right into the kitchen and we didn’t want those lights to compete with the rest of the space.

We get so many requests for white kitchens that we were ecstatic to go a little darker for this home. The cabinets were lightened up with white countertops with waterfall edges and white pendants that helped brighten the space. The natural wood barstools brought in warmth and texture and the deep walnut shelving helps connect the kitchen with the natural wood beams and ceiling in the great room. The open shelving was placed opposite of the wall of cabinetry to give the space balance.

We may have had less shelving space here, but we still took advantage of the open shelving and filled it with accessories. A wooden cutting board, our go-to crockblack canisters, a recipe box,  stoneware cans, and another unique cutting board also kept things warm and bright. We love to top it all off with a killer sconce!

  1. project looks amaaaaazing!! any info on the copper eaves on outside? pretty sure you used these beauties in another project. love them!

  2. Love the thoughtfulness of every space and detail. Being able to let go of a statement front entry light for an amazing console and the overall feel of the place is an awesome statement on its own

  3. would you guys mind sharing the info on the sofas? we are in need new sofas in our living room and would love some info on where you guys like to source quality sofas. thank you!

p.s. our family has a house in promontory, i’l have to look for this one the next time we are there.

      1. I too was interested in the sofas, especially the love seat. It is incredibly difficult to find loveseats nowadays, well stylish ones anyway that aren’t from a big box store. I have looked everywhere to no avail. Everything is either a small settee or 78"+

  4. Sooo beautiful!! I love watching your videos too! Can you tell me the kitchen cabinet color? It is the perfect blue gray color!!!

  5. Can you please give me details on the brand on flooring! Assuming it’s engineered hardwood based on the plank size?

  6. This house is so stunning! Just like everything else you guys do! Would you mind sharing your source for the open shelving brackets in the kitchen? Thanks so much!

  7. Breathtaking as always. You always manage to raise the bar with every project – even when I don’t think you can top the last one, you do! Congratulations, your clients must be beyond thrilled with the result. May I ask where the drawer pulls in the kitchen are from? Love them!

  8. I am very inspired by your design. We have a similar layout for our living room and would like to do the same stone. Can you please tell me where you found the stone?

  9. Amazing! Love every detail. I’m wondering about that wood flooring throughout. Its gorgeous and the perfect color.

  10. Such beautiful colors used throughout. Really love the dark / navy blues and wood tones. You guys nailed it. Please do share who’s the architect and builder of this home? Thanks so much in advance 🙂

  11. This house is breathtaking, if my husband could have his dream home this would be it! I am such a fan of your work please keep the inspirations coming.

  12. Can you please share the source info on the nested grasscloth trays on the coffee table in the great room? They are gorgeous!

  13. Stunning! Is the range hood a pop up style? Do you have a brand you recommend? We had a Bosch one in our last home and it would always snug out the glass flame if on low/simmer setting. Thank so much!

  14. As always, Studio McGee has nailed it!!!! Can you please provide the source / style / colour of the kitchen cabinet hardware? I have the same color cabinets and am looking for just the right pulls and knobs. These are perfect! What a S T U N N I N G home!! 🙂

  15. So beautiful! I’m looking at the Morris Lantern for my breakfast nook. Is the one pictured the gilded iron in size large? It looks more gold in the photo so just want to make sure–love how it looks!

  16. Love this project so much! Let’s just say my husband and I may have torn up concrete in our new lake build to layout our kitchen in this fun manner;) We were wondering what kind of door your pantry is? Really love how how it looks in the space. Always Look forward to all of your posts and projects

  17. Every reveal is absolutely stunning! Could you share where the 3 baskets at the bottom of the statement console are from? I look forward to your Austin, TX transformation/reveal!

  18. Amazing!! I want this house!! Can you share the name and source of the fireplace stone? 🙂

  19. oooh so lovely! the french blue! and those gorgeous open shelves.

a tiny very cute typo though – you have "vintage corianders" when I’m pretty sure you meant "colanders". I was looking for a heritage herb and then the penny dropped :-).

  20. I love this house. I am working on a water damaged St George home that we have had for 20 years. It’s time for an overhaul. The painter is coming and I have tried to learn about white on whites…cabinets, walls, trim, etc. If a white is chosen for the walls, is a complimentary white used for doors trim and cabinets or the same color. I read this home used white dove, which I love, but not sure if is thoughout the main home or not, but only see one other wall color used in a bedroom.

  21. Hi Studio McGee – LOVING this Kitchen. I am in the process of painting my shaker cabinets and i am using this Kitchen as inspiration. But I got a sample of "Cheating Heart" and it looks WAY darker than your pictures. Do you have and "unedited" or not overexposed version of this kitchen? So i can see how this really looks in person.

    1. Hi Emilie! Thank you! Cheating Heart is definitely one of those colors that changes in the light. It photographs differently depending on the time of day, location in home, etc. if there isn’t a lot of natural light coming in the space it appears very dark. Hope this helps!!

  22. Hi! Its me again! Thanks for getting back to me about the paint color, now I just have to decide if I want to use Cheating Heart or if i should try and color match what the cabinets look like in the picture. Ah, choices, choices… I don’t know how you guys do it! haha

Can you source the faucets and cabinet pulls you used for this kitchen??? They are so gorgeous, and it seams no matter how much I scour the internet, I still keep coming back to these.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Melissa! Which rug are you looking for? The last photo in the post is tagged with all the products and it has links to both the rugs!

  23. Hi, I’m from Australia and love your style! I’m building and plan on a fireplace stone like yours. The source won’t help me but I wondered if they are individual stone or a dry stone/stack stone panel that you glue on? Would appreciate the help! Meagan x

  24. Hi! I LOVE the table in the kitchen eating nook area! Can you tell me who makes it or where I can purchase something like that?

  25. Beautiful house! Could you please tell me the source for the shelves in the kitchen? I love the brackets and was wondering if they came with the shelves or if they were custom. Thanks so much!

  26. I covet the bench in the foyer, with the leather seat. Is it foldable like an army cot? Can you please tell me where it comes from and where I might be able to purchase?
Also, ALL of your work is beyond beautiful!!

    Thank you,

    Marie

  27. Wow!! I am working with an architect and just saw first plans. My goal is to achieve something CLOSE to the beauty that you have in this house! Any chance you have an idea of the dimensions of the great room… this is my challenge so far, making sure the space is adequate but not too big!

  28. Beautiful spaces. Where are the open shelves and fixtures from in the kitchen? If they’re custom, where do you suggest shopping for materials to recreate the look if not going the DIY route?

    Thanks,
    TW

  29. Hello. I love your style and am using this kitchen as inspiration. Can you please tell me how the stove is vented? I would love to put my stove on my wall with no upper cabinets and against windows ( like you have in the picture) but not sure how this can be done. Thanks so much

  30. Hello! We are building a mountain condo in Idaho & I love your style. Hopefully our kitchen/dining/living space will look quite similar. Our cabinets are much more of a blue hue than the "Cheating Heart" that you used. I’m thinking it will look a little too bright & arts & craftsy. If we don’t have another choice, any recommendations on incorporating a brighter teal blue? Thank you!

  31. Love the style & paint color selection. I am wondering in the great room – did you pain the baseboards the same color as the walls? I believe from your paint list that the walls are Benjamin Moore – White Dove. Are the baseboards the same? If not, what color did you go with for baseboards? Thanks!!

    1. Check out the mission drawer pulls from rejuvenation in the burnished antique finish!! Very similar if not the same.

  32. Would you mind sharing the open shelving source for the shelves and brackets? I check out rejuvenation but their shelving is only 1" thick. I like this thicker look, may it be 2 inches or so?

  33. I echo Stevie’s comment… I would love to know where you sourced your brackets for your open shelving. I cannot, for the life of me seem to find wrap around brackets that suit shelving wider than one inch.

    1. Me 3!!!!! I too am on the hunt for the shelves! Rejuventation have the same bracket style but its only for the 1 inch, and the color looks slightly off (although.. pictures are unreliable when shopping online lol)

Btdubbs, love you shea and mcgee team! Totally rocking it!! Reading this blog is the best part of my week!!

  34. Love your work, so talented! The cheating hearts cabinet color looks lighter than the swatch, did you have it lightened and if so can you share %? Thank you!!!

  35. What is the main living and kitchen flooring? Looks really great! Would like to source a similar product for our renovation. Thanks!

  36. Absolutely beautiful work! Really hoping for some detail on the flooring– even if you aren’t keen on sharing sources, would you be able to share wood variety and plank width?? About to undergo a big reflooring project on the house we just purchased.

  37. I’m also really hoping for some detail on the flooring, would love if you could share any details including plank width!

  38. It's all just lovely. Would you please post the paint color of the kitchen cabinets? It's just what I've been looking for says:

  39. Hello! I am in love with the "modern mountain home" interior design. Where did you get the pillows for the living room!?! Specifically the burnt orange and white pillows on the grey couch. Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful designs! says:

  40. Beautiful kitchen. Can you share the countertops? I’ve tried reading through and can’t seem to find it. Thanks!

  41. Gorgeous, as always! Is the fireplace "San Miguel"? Looks a bit lighter here, and less "rusty-orange". Love it!
